Additions and Deletions

Secondary changes of the author or a later editor to the manuscript may occur in the form of deletions or additions. For this purpose, the elements <add> (addition) and <del> (deletion) are used.

In the case of an addition, the <add> element can be enhanced with an @place attribute specifying the place of the addition. The following values of @place are possible:

Element @place Value Meaning
<add> superlinear entered above the line
sublinear entered below the line
intralinear entered within the line
across written over the original text
left entered at the left margin
right entered at the right margin

In the case of deletion, the type of deletion is indicated with the @rendition attribute of the <del> element. The following values are possible for @rendition:

Element @rendition Value Meaning
<del> #ow deletion by overwriting the original text
#s deletion by crossing out
#erased deletion by erasing, scraping, etc.
