Basic Structure of the Encoding of Figures

There are various forms of figures, e. g. images illustrating the text, plates, maps, sheet music examples, graphs, special characters.

Figures can contain a title (
) and more detailed image explanations (represented as normal text in paragraphs:
):

[title of the figure (if applicable)]

[explanation of the figure in the text (if applicable)]

The elements
and
are optional. If a figure is without a title or further description, it is documented by an empty
element.
